Both input protection coding (IP, ingress protection) and impact protection coding (IK, impact protection) are very important for street, highway and other lighting products. IP values are required for all road and street applications according to the IEC / EN 60598 standard. In addition, when providing protection for high-impact glass and indoor lamps, IK values are required in certain applications.
The IEC 62262 standard, designed by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), explains that enclosures should be tested for IK values defined as the level of protection against external mechanical impacts.
This standard has also been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with this title:
TS EN 62262 Degree of protection provided by enclosures - for the protection of electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts (IK Code)
The IK impact protection coding is done as IKXX. The value XX is a number between 00 and 10, which indicates the degree of protection provided by electrical enclosures (including fittings) against external mechanical impacts. The IK rating scale defines the strength of a housing to withstand the impact energy levels measured in joules.
The IEC 62262 standard specifies how the enclosure should be installed for testing, the desired atmospheric conditions, the amount and distribution of test effects, and the amount of impact to be used for each IK class level.
The IK coding shows the degree of protection against external mechanical impacts. Namely,
IK00 = Unprotected
IK01 = Protected against the impact of 0.14 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.25 kg mass, reduced from 56 mm to the affected surface)
IK02 = Protected against the impact of 0.2 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.25 kg mass, reduced from 80 mm to the affected surface)
IK03 = Protected against the impact of 0.35 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.25 kg mass, reduced from 140 mm to the affected surface)
IK04 = Protected against the impact of 0.5 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.25 kg mass, reduced from 200 mm to the affected surface)
IK05 = Protected against the impact of 0.7 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.25 kg mass, reduced from 280 mm to the affected surface)
IK06 = Protected against the impact of 1 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.25 kg mass, reduced from 400 mm to the affected surface)
IK07 = Protected against the impact of 2 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 0.5 kg mass, reduced from 400 mm to the affected surface)
IK08 = Protected against the impact of 5 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 1.7 kg mass, reduced from 300 mm to the affected surface)
IK09 = Protected against the impact of 10 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 5 kg mass, reduced from 200 mm to the affected surface)
IK10 = Protected against the impact of 20 joules (equivalent to the effect of the 5 kg mass, reduced from 400 mm to the affected surface)
The IK impact protection coding is decisive in product selection. This assessment does not relate to the mechanical life of the product, but only to indicate the environmental exposure of this product. Therefore, it is an important feature of the product.
The impact energy measured in joules depends on two factors: the distance between the impacting object and the sample being tested and the weight of the impacting object. An IK code is given to the product according to the resistance level determined by the IK tests. This code is the value between IK00 and IK10 as described above and indicates the energy level the product can absorb. Charpy pendulum impact tester is used in these tests.
Our company also provides IK (impact protection) testing services within the scope of certification services. Thanks to these services, enterprises are able to produce more efficient, high performance and quality products in a safe, fast and uninterrupted manner.
IK (impact protection) testing services provided within the scope of certification services are only one of the services provided by our organization in this respect. Many other certification services are also available.
